Adding or Removing Instructors/Teaching Assistants/Other Users in Blackboard

Adding an Instructor, Teaching Assistant, Course Builder or Grader

  • Go to Users and Groups > Users > Enroll User -> Find Users to Enroll. (Be sure to click Enroll User.)
  • Type the username into the box, or “Browse” to the user’s account. (If you can’t find the user, he/she is likely already enrolled!)
  • When the username is in the box, select the appropriate role, and click Submit.

Changing the Role of a user

  • Go to Users and Groups > Users.
  • Find the user’s entry. Change the second drop down menu to “Not Blank” if it is not set to that already. If there are more than 25 entries you may need to choose “Edit Paging” at the bottom right and increase the number of users that show up on a single page.
  • At the User’s entry, click the down arrow and select Edit.
  • At the bottom of the editing window, select the appropriate role, and click Submit.

Removing a user

  • Go to Users and Groups > Users.
  • Find the user’s entry. Change the second drop down menu to “Not Blank” if it is not set to that already. If there are more than 25 entries you may need to choose “Edit Paging” at the bottom right and increase the number of users that show up on a single page.
  • At the user’s entry, check the box and then click “Remove Users from Course” at either the top or bottom of the window. (You may also accomplish the same thing from the down arrow for the entry.) Confirm that this is what you want to do.
  • SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT REMOVING OTHER INSTRUCTORS: If an enrolled instructor is no longer teaching the course you are now the instructor of, it may be desirable to remove them. In order to remove another instructor you must first change that user’s role to something besides Instructor. See the section above. **We hear occasionally that instructors receive an “Access Denied” error message when they attempt to actually remove the instructor. There is no reason to worry about that error as the removal actually worked.**

Note about “Unavailable Guests” inside a Blackboard site: These entries represent “dropped students” and you can simply ignore them. You can also remove them if you wish. Click for more details about unavailable guests.
